Day 1: The winter palace

Day 1 in Ulaanbaatar- After a suprisingly yummy lunch of fried rice with egg we drove to the Bogd Khan museum with our tour guide. This was a very fancy winter palace decorated with beautiful embroidery, carvings and art. The Eighth living Buddha lived here, and also the last king for 20 years. It was built between 1893-1903. The first ger/yurt that I ever saw was located here and was lined with 150 snow lepords!

We then walked up some steps about half way up a hill to a stone monument of what I believe was a soldier. Behind this, on concrete posts, is a huge circular concrete ring completely covered in muticoloured mosaic pictures. From up there I could see the whole of Ulaanbaatar (including a prison for child pickpocketers and theives), which is surrounded by mountains. It was incredible.
