Happy 90th birthday to a dedicated volunteer

As you may know, 2009 marks Save the Children’s 90th birthday.  Since 1919 Save the Children has been inspiring real change in children’s lives, and we’re determined to help millions more children around the world.

However you may not be aware that it’s also a Save the Children volunteer’s 90th birthday this year.  This fantastic volunteer has been fundraising for Save the Children for many years and is President of Save the Children’s Aberdare Branch.  She is a local celebrity and can be regularly seen collecting outside Aberdare Coliseum come rain, wind or shine to raise much needed funds for Save the Children’s life-saving work.

It is my privlege to meet many such volunteers as part of my role, and I am humbled by their unwaivering dedication to Save the Children.  Many of the Branches in Wales were established over 50 years ago: Llanidloes, Swansea and Port Talbot , to name but a few.  The fundraising Save the Children’s supporter groups do today is as crucial as it was when they launched, and they continue to find fun and innovative ways to raise money.

Being part of a supporter group is a great way to meet new friends and make a difference to children worldwide.  I mentioned in my last blog about a fabulous new Group in Cardiff who are holding an End of Summer BBQ tomorrow evening, and we have another new Group which has recently formed in Llanelli.  The Llanelli Group are holding their first fundraising event Thursday 1st October at Stradey Park Hotel.  The event is a wine tasting evening and Big Brother celebrity Imogen Thomas will be lending her support to the evening too.
