Tea plus MPs equals influence

Like people everywhere, I love to put the world to rights over a cup of tea (and, let’s face it, a slice of cake).

So, I’m looking forward to multiplying that by thousands on Thursday, 9 June.

At Tea time for Change, we’re inviting supporters of Save the Children, and friends at ActionAid, Oxfam, Christian Aid, Tearfund and Cafod to pull up a chair and meet with their MP.

It’s a refreshing chance to chat about the leadership role the UK has taken against global poverty – and what more still needs to be done.

Vital time

This is the first big opportunity this year to show the 200 new MPs in parliament, as well as their more experienced colleagues,  there’s a strong constituency in favour of international development.

That there’s deep support for reforms that work for the world’s poor. Such as multi-national companies transparently paying their fair share of tax in poor countries, and new ideas like the Financial Transaction (or Robin Hood) Tax.

It’s so important that they hear this message.

That’s why we’d love to have Save the Children staff members with us on the day, sitting down with their MPs, talking about why they’re passionate about international development, and making a difference for poor children.

Preparations are including finding giant teacups, baking, preparing bunting – and putting our heads together about the most powerful ways of impacting the government.

The huge potential which lies in this collective of organisations and their supporters is something which excites me about Tea Time for Change – Westminster Central Hall is going to buzz on 9 June!
