Trekkers samba as RB Global Challenge launches

Cocktails and Capoiera helped set the mood as Reckitt Benckiser’s 2011 Global Challenge in aid of Save the Children kicked off with a colourful launch party at Brazilian bar Guanabara in central London last night.

A performance of Copoiera, a traditional Brazilian art form, that combines martial arts, sports and music, wowed the crowd and inspired some enthusiastic Samba moves as Save the Children staff joined some of the 65 RB employees from 33 countries due to take part in this year’s challenge in Brazil next month.

Expected to net an amazing £300,000 for a range of Save the Children projects, this fantastic fundraising event will, for the first time, involve two separate challenges.

Vulnerable children

A total of 31 staff from across RB’s global business will spend a week renovating two crèches used by 480 vulnerable children and their families in the northeastern state of Pernambuco.

A further 34 of their colleagues will then embark on a trek through the stunning Chapada Diamantina region.

Money raised through their efforts will boost our RB-funded programme work in India, Angola and Tanzania as well two projects in Brazil, including the crèches themselves and the Saving Children’s Lives in Pernambuco project.

Multi-million pound initiative

The funding of this project will help us leverage £3.4m as part of a five-year co-financing initiative with the European Commission to improve early childhood health, nutrition, education and protection.

This year’s RB Global Challenge builds on the success of two previous challenges – the first of which in 2007 saw 50 employees from almost 20 countries raise an incredible £198,000 by trekking through the foothills of the Himalayas.

Two years later 62 RB staff from more than 25 countries raised a further £276,000 by trekking through India.
