Lloyds Banking Group: a tribute to the Everest base camp team

At 6.45am on Thursday 21 June, after three flights and a 12-hour stopover in Mumbai airport, the final members of the team made it back to UK soil after the most incredible, life-changing adventure.

More challenging and more incredible than I ever imagined possible, 36 people made it to Everest base camp and back, raising more than £230k to help the UK’s poorest children through Save the Children’s Families and Schools Together (FAST) programme.

Hallucinating my way from Lobuche to Gorak Shep and finally to Everest base camp, the tears of relief and exhaustion came flooding out, as the last of our group reached our final destination and our goal was realised.

“It’s the journey, not the destination”

Never has that phrase, had more resonance.

Our arrival at Everest base camp was just one of hundreds of highlights along our three week adventure.

Laughter, tears, suspension bridges, diarrhoea and vomiting, out-of-body experiences, long-drop toilets, helicopters, Sherpas, Everest Beer, yak cheese, carbs with carbs, garlic soup… the perfect ingredients for an experience that I’ll never forget.

I’m so proud to have walked alongside such passionate and committed individuals forging friendships that will last a lifetime.

Through the incredible achievement of these 35 Lloyds Banking Group employees, showing tenacity in the face of adversity and united by their team spirit, they will change the lives of hundreds of the poorest children and their families across the UK – a truly incredible and humbling feat.
