Vietnam: recovering from the floods

Late last year the Mekong Delta region in Vietnam was hit by its worst floods in ten years.

The frequency and severity of flooding in the area has increased over recent years. Many people here worry that 2012, ‘the year of the golden dragon’, will bring even more severe flooding.

What we’re doing

We’re helping children and their families who have been affected by flooding.

We made an emergency response immediately after last year’s flooding. However, many of the most vulnerable households have been unable to recover fully.

We’re now running three programmes for these households:

  • support with livelihoods
  • shelter
  • water, sanitation and hygiene promotion (WASH).

I’ve recently been sent over here to work on a short-term deployment. My role straddles all three of these essential programmes.

Look out for more details in my next blog entry.

Our Early Recovery Assistance project in the Mekong Delta region in Vietnam is funded by ECHO – the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department.
