UK: Our supporter of the month learns to keep her premature baby warm

Our Supporter of the Month for March is Ami-Mattu Amara. Her baby (Joshua) was born 10 weeks prematurely and needed specialist care. Although Ami-Mattu now lives in the UK, she was born in Sierra Leone, so she is aware of how lucky Joshua is to have had access to essential equipment like an incubator and a feeding tube, as well as to midwives who were able to teach her about kangaroo care, which involves the baby being held on their mother’s chest so that they have constant skin-to-skin contact, which helps regulate the baby’s heartbeat and body temperature.

Ami-Matthu supports Save the Children because she wants all children to have the same care Joshua had. Here’s what she had to say: “I don’t take for granted any of the specialised, world-class care Joshua received, because had I still been living in Sierra Leone, having him early would have been a lot more stressful and he might well not have made it. Oh to live in a world where every single premature baby had the type of care and facilities Joshua has had and continues to have.” Having weighed just 2lb 8oz at birth, Joshua is now 15 weeks old and a healthy 9lb.
